JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OC Tournament #4: R6M3 - Gioia Arancini vs. Yuigahama Kaito

The results are in for Match 2...
Location - Washington, DC:
It had been quite some time since Pengolo had seen many of the Rascals. Since their home–however involuntary as it may have been–had been destroyed, they had gone their separate ways. Nowhere Man had retreated to his commune; Take had long distanced themselves; and Tunde had joined an alliance with other UU players. With this newfound freedom, Hive returned home and resumed his work with the Red Cross.
It was in his nature to help those when and where he could. And it was for that reason that his mind kept straying back to the fall of La Villa and all those who had been left behind. Hive had managed to convince Lucas not to dive back in for them with the same reasoning his Stands had given him: those still within would be safe as the escapees regrouped. Hive and Lucas had kept in contact since then, eyes to the day when they would reconvene to finish the fight. His dear Marcella would have to wait, just a little longer.
He perked up as he heard the door ring. Lucas hadn’t mentioned he would be around any time soon… he’d said he’d been across the country the other day. He smiled warmly.
Imagine his surprise it was another of his friends!
“Tunde!?”
Sure enough, the woman was standing on his doorstep, donning a head wrap and sunglasses which she lowered to wink at him. “You sound surprised.”
“Well, yeah!” Hive wiped the shock off his face and beamed at her. Tunde had given him no contact info before leaving, but evidently still having kept tabs on him. But when he opened the door wider so that she could enter, she shook her head, staying on the threshold. Hive frowned. “Can’t stay for long?”
Tunde nodded. “Unfortunately not, but at least I bring a gift.” At this, the space behind Tunde warped and distorted, 「AmbitionZ」 shimmering into view. Hive recognized the Stand from its late user’s sojourn in La Villa, but even still...he lifted his eyepatch.
His new friend, 「Solid State Scouter」’s reticle focusing on the Stand leering before him. Even in the glimpse he got before he had to shut his eye and put back on his patch, he could tell much had changed about it.
Hive looked at her with some suspicion. “Where did you find 「AmbitionZ」?”
“I had to run some errands in Egypt. Share some notes, reconnect with some old friends, I thought you two might be able to get along.” 「AmbitionZ」 floated over to Hive, chittering happily to itself all the while, looking over him hungrily.
Seemingly mollified, he could feel the click of it attaching to him, binding to his soul. Could feel the slow drain of its weight on his flesh, as it began to be eaten away…such a wonderful feeling. He stroked over his arm. This Stand…「AmbitionZ」...he’d have to make himself the best meal he could be for his new friend.
Hive understood that 「AmbitionZ」 saw itself as a weapon, something aimless and destructive, but he was so familiar with aimless. He knew his friend was far from the death machine that others may have seen it as. But, if it were a weapon, he sheathed it, dispelling the Stand… for now. He could properly introduce it to the others later. He looked up at Tunde, only to see her walking back into the night.
“Hey, wait up!” He called, extending a hand. She turned a bit, a smirk on her face.
“I’ll see you soon, Pengolo. But I still have matters to attend to first. You do too.” She waved. “I’ll see you sometime.”
Tunde hummed to herself, paging through her trusty little book. So many labs, so many people, so much material… ah, this was a really wonderful day. A breakthrough. A chance to set the wheels turning, to put her little plan into motion. Maybe someone would even come after her soon…Schioppo? Gioia? Kaito?
She smiled, holding the pages to her chest. Oh…all of them were so wonderful…any of them would be. Hadrian, that dear boy, was surely living his life as well. She would have to look into him later….
True warmth blossomed in her. Her life really was a blessed one. Her eyes had been opened, and this sight…she wouldn’t turn down this path for anything.
The winner is Tunde Ó Santos, with a score of 63 to Hadrian Moore’s 55!

With that, we must now sadly bid goodbye to Team Neptune, Ocean’s 11, the fifth team to be eliminated from Tournament 4. They came out swinging from the very first match, and while they didn’t often make the top of many perceived rankings, no one could deny the impact they had, and they clearly had what it took to stick around into the quarterfinals.
Let’s take a moment to remember…
8th Place: Jeremiah Peacekeeper - This firefighter may have gotten in over his head in a larger than life battle against Fighter Jet, but you can’t deny he put on a show and went out with a bang.
7th Place: Annabelle - She may have been quiet during her time in the Bohemian Archive, but after coming in second during the Running of the Bulls, it’s rumored she began having some… interesting interactions with people in high places.
6th Place: Akira Inoue - Silent and unknown among her teammates like Annabelle before her, Akira RETIRED quietly after losing a football game to the Black Label Society.
5th Place: Calendar Waters - This four swordsman might have gotten eliminated as a player during Round 1 while fighting a confectioner in a corn maze, but don’t let that fool you; he just started adminning matches for them instead! Between a cooking contest and penguin sledding, no one could doubt his loyalty to Andromeda. Of course, being four boys in one took its toll on him eventually and the separate Cals went their separate ways.
4th Place: Jack Norworth - While he may have settled in comfortably to his role as the team’s Mission Control, let’s not forget his own impressive showing as a player. He began his run by teaming up with his Bug Bro to fight in a Georgia apple orchard. After this, he came second in a cooking competition refereed by his former teammate
3rd Place: Eugene “Buggy” Baxter - In this run, Jack’s Bug Bro proved himself a proper Biblical Plague to those who crossed him. It started off strong in that apple orchard, and he followed it up even stronger. You see, he brought locusts back to Egypt with the ultimate result of toppling a corrupt self-proclaimed Pharaoh. But his luck ran out in another desert when he made some tactical mistakes against a pair of snipers under a Bad Moon.
2nd Place: Lenoir “Nora” Kleid - Put simply, Nora was the heart and soul of this team. It started off slow when she lost a football game, but she got a second chance and proved herself worthy of it. Like Jack, she found herself working as the team’s Mission Control, but wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in a raid on a Black Beetles Warehouse. Ultimately, she couldn’t quite take victory against Urban Uprising’s other legendary old-timer in a friendly casino collectathon, but her presence can still be felt without a doubt.
1st Place: Hadrian Moore - There are no two ways about it; Hadrian was a force to be reckoned with, and no one doubted that for a second. He took the very first Tag in a high-octane train fight and his momentum never slowed. One of the most effective character-defining moments in the tourney was his Trout Speech during a battle on a rotating iceberg. Seriously. Read it. After that, he raided the Black Beetles’ headquarters and took down their head Stand alongside Demis Roussos. Back in Urban Uprising, he was able to gaze at the Incomprehensible Face of God Which Cracks the Sky and come out unscathed. His biggest impact, however, was undoubtedly when he reunited with Demis and killed Nate Selleck. But even his streak had to end, and ultimately, Tunde had the ambitions to take him down.

Schioppo Fucile wasn’t the only Fairy Feller anxious and brooding during the first weeks of 2021, worried about how he’d be able to take down one of the most dangerous women in the world, a direct threat to those he cared about.
Caring about people was not something Ric Hawks considered a strong suit, and in some ways that was an advantage. Getting too worked up about his fears for Melanzane and the Fellers would play right into the Iron Rooster’s ability. But it didn’t mean he didn’t care at all. Far from it. The departure of Stefan had left a hole somewhere Ric hadn’t known existed.
All of this passed through his head as he lay awake in the dark of his motel room. He’d poured the last year of his time and income into Urban Uprising and then XPLICIT, with nothing to show for it. Sure, Kris, Schioppo, and especially Gioia had succeeded in taking down Lyte thanks in no small part to his own research, but…
Ric’s thoughts were interrupted by the creak of a door and a beam of light from the hallway. The Arancinis stepped inside the room Melanzane and Ric were sharing, moving quietly to avoid disturbing him.
“Hey,” Ric said gruffly. No point in them trying not to wake him when there was no chance he’d get any sleep tonight anyway.
“Ah, did we wake you?” Melanzane asked.
Ric sat up and shook his head. “No. Can’t sleep anyway.”
“I am sorry to hear that, my friend. What’s bothering you?”
Ric clicked on the bedside lamp and shot the ballerino a look. “Guess.”
“Feeling powerless in the face of Saint Cecilia?” Melanzane mused. “I must admit I can relate. There is little I can do anymore without danger, but such is the way of things. We must be strong, yes?”
Ric grunted in noncommittal agreement.
Gioia watched the two men silently, her own worries mounting. Ric, her father, and her boyfriend were all walking into dangerous confrontations, and everyone seemed too afraid to even communicate with each other. Noriko and Kris were both pulling double-duty as the voices of reason and positivity, fine lines for the bus driver and traceur to walk.
“We can’t worry about her yet anyway,” she found herself saying. “She’s been keeping her head down all year, and there’s plenty to clean up closer to home.”
Ric looked up. “Oh yeah?”
“Remember when we were with La Horde?” Gioia asked. “What the guys from Ocean’s 11 said, what they found about the Black Beetles. Selleck and his intern might be dead, but there’s still XPLICIT out there. Hadrian made it all the way through their top Stand to get this information.”
“We already have a mission, Gioia,” Ric growled. “Schioppo’s already chasing a vendetta, and we can’t afford anyone else running off chasing sidequests.”
“Sidequests?” Gioia chuckled sadly. “You’re starting to sound like Stefan.”
“He has a point, though,” Melanzane noted.
Gioia sighed, straightening her back and looking Ric and her father in the eye, each in turn. “It’s more than just Cecilia. I’m not going to let anything go half finished.”
Location - Somewhere outside Sacramento, California:
Clear skies and a nice, lazy morning, a man in a white suit with black floral designs reclined in a lawn chair on his porch and idly strummed on a banjo. Despite being a capo of a massive gang, a lone Lennon played for an audience of plants rather than people, dulcet chords floating out over the orchard.
All the Beetles’ warehouses were changed out, the shipping routes rerouted, and more to ensure others couldn’t get their hands on their product. Instead, the gang’s supplies of XPLICIT were being recalled, all stores sending it to a location.
All stores except one: Lennon’s pride and joy, this farm and his Stand ability had allowed him to maintain the stream of XPLICIT that they had, but all that was coming to an end too. XPLICIT wasn’t worth the hassle, before it was easy to measure out the product to prevent rampant Stand manifestation, but now that the cat was out of the bag, even just holding it was a liability.
Lennon had tried to keep his cash crop, even trying to create a hybrid to match its drug quality without the side effects. However, after countless debates with Carter, he ultimately agreed to burn this bridge and move on with the rest of their operations. At least the shipping lines they had set up were worth something.
SNAP!
The pick broke after days of use. Lennon frowned, before slipping off his ring. He pinched it between his fingers and, after a few picks and plucks to accustom himself to its weight and feel, resumed strumming. Even if the gang didn’t have much use for XPLICIT, others still did. And so, Lennon waited. He didn’t need to waste any manpower to take care of the farm, sooner or later there should be a Stand user or two coming.
All Lennon had to do was wait.
Location - San Francisco, California:
Kaito basked in the air of a sunny Californian winter morning. Not a flake of snow to be found, just a smile on his face, and a train ticket to Sacramento in his hand. The once-member of the Civil Disobedients, now disbanded, found himself walking with a purpose towards the train station. It really felt like he had turned over a new leaf. He was able to start putting the last few months behind him, and continue doing his own thing… which he had yet to decide what it would be.
Never mind a bout of teenage indecision; for Kaito, life was looking up. He had even begun reconnecting with another former Civil Disobedients member, Djimon! As the young brewmaster had angrily departed from the team during a stroke of poor luck, he thought he had ruined that particular relationship forever. But when he had accepted the call to join the Uncivil Umbra, there he found a familiar face in Djimon, and a mutual desire to rekindle the old friendship.
Making his way to the designated platform, he found himself now pondering the disbandment of Uncivil Umbra. It had only been hours, maybe a day or two at the most, but the level of purpose and comradery he had felt while he had been there was unmatched. He had set out to help collapse Lyte, and had succeeded in his task. Arrests were made, perhaps he had found a little too much fun in some particular destruction, but with the danger thwarted, he was able to just have fun with his Stand, act his age again!
On the horizon, a train sped towards the station, and as it pulled beside the platform, creaking to a halt, over the PA, a voice sounded.
“Now boarding for Sacramento.”
Finding a seat onboard, Kaito shoved his ticket into his pocket, staring out the window as he recalled what he had set out to do. He had heard bits and pieces about a certain vineyard through the grapevine—no pun intended. It was run by the Black Beetles, and inexplicably, the operation was tied to XPLICIT production.
If Kaito could have a hand in shutting it down, he’d do it.
Location - Somewhere outside Sacramento, California:
Kaito hopped out of the car at the given address, the taxi peeling away behind him. He looked around at the quaint entrance, the grass and shrubs scattered around the property neatly manicured. Kaito rubbed his fingers idly over the leaves in a shrub shaped in a way he had never seen before. For the supposed drug stockpile of a gang, the villa was oddly serene, quiet. No one and nothing in sight as he looked around. He had been expecting something else, although he couldn’t quite put what that was into words. Maybe some beaten up, foreclosed hideout? Blood splatters on the dirt, “No Trespassing” signs on a barbed wire fence? Soon, however, his eyes fell upon a person walking deeper into the property.
“Hey!”
The woman turned to face him, her guarded expression softening to one of recognition. A young man with whom her teammates had become very acquainted, and whose teammate she had the utmost respect for. Gioia waved out to him. “You must be Kaito. My name is Gioia Arancini. I’m a friend of Kris and Noriko’s.”
“Oh!” Kaito straightened out, smiling warmly and waving likewise. “Yeah, that’s me! Nice to finally meet you, Gioia.” Chuckling, he continued. “Fairy Fellers, what’s with me and running into you over and over again? Without you guys, I’m not sure I would’ve been able to take on that Fork-head!”
Gioia blinked, “Who?”
Kaito flushed slightly, “Don’t worry about it! It’s uh—he’s off doing his own thing I think, don’t worry about it!” In recovery, he gestured up the winding dirt road that led to the side of the property. “Let’s see what’s up, c’mon!”
The walk up the long path was fairly quiet, no signs of danger to be found. For a man that could control plants, it didn’t seem like any here would be too capable of harming anybody. Thornless white roses, a bed of 10 leafed clovers, a tree growing multiple different species of apples, an odorless rafflesia and other rare or mildly interesting plants.
As they continued walking they began to hear...a banjo playing in the distance? The performer could just barely be made out now: a man in a white suit with floral patterns, it seemed that one of the leaders of the Black Beetles was sitting right in front of them,
“Hello there,” Lennon waved to them as they approached, lazily rocking in a chair on the porch. “How’d you guys like my collection? Pretty neat, ain’t it?”
Kaito smirked, and broke into a sprint, 「Fujisawa Loser」 summoned behind him. “KANPAI!” He yelled out, a tendril of booze prepped to slam down on the front steps.
Lennon blinked, and tossed a black rose from his suit in his direction. The rose floated down and burst into a small cloud. Kaito stumbled, eyes watering. “ Ah sh… aah…..aaah….. Aachu..aachu!” He began to sneeze uncontrollably, falling to the ground clutching his stomach as it became more and more difficult to breathe, vision swimming as his eyes kept watering.
“Kaito!” Gioia yelled, reading herself into a sprinting position as well—
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you” Lennon chimed in, getting Gioia to pause slightly. “There’s still pollen hanging in the air. Besides, I just wanted to talk to you two. Nothing more.” Kaito’s sneezing began to subside, and he started taking deep breaths, gasping as if he had just been drowned and resurfaced.
“...Now, you two are here which means you should know how us Black Beetles work. What we’re doing.” Lennon raised his right hand and flashed a peculiar looking ring. “Now I promise you what I’m telling you is true. The Black Beetles are getting out of the XPLICIT business. Everything has been recalled or is being destroyed at this moment. Behind this house is my XPLICIT farm, I already cut their water supply and mostly killed the trees. I just need some people to help me break and toss them away.” Lennon extended his hand to the two of them, “Now that’s where you two could give me a hand.”
Kaito and Gioia look to each other. Kaito laughed. “So you want people more inclined to kick your ass to do your work for you? Maybe the rest of the gang is busy, huh?” He brushed the stubble on his chin. “You’re totally using us, right?”
“Does it matter?” Lennon stated. “You’re getting what you wanted, for free, and I’m prepared to give you something for the effort. I do have some information you guys may be interested, and you did come all this way to make sure the XPLICIT is gone, right?” Lennon stood up, “The choice is yours. You can leave, break the trees yourselves...”
Lennon walked up to the door. “Or you could try and fight me. I wouldn’t recommend it. Talk to me in the greenhouse behind the house once the deed is done.” With that, he went inside and closed the door.
Gioia and Kaito stared at the house, and glanced to each other awkwardly. There was absolutely no way that the house wasn’t trapped extensively.
“This is odd,” Gioia said simply. “You’re right in that we’re being used.”
“Yeah,” Kaito added. “I wanted to try a little fighting before I did what I came here to do, but….”
“But it would be near suicide to go in without extensive preparations of our own. Very likely fireproofed as well.”
Kaito shrugged. “Well, anyways!” He punched his fist. “I’mma go ahead and get started.”
Gioia quirked an eyebrow. “Even though we’re being used?”
Kaito scoffed. “So what, people have been using me for years. I don’t care, he gets something out of it and I get a good time. Win win.” He began walking to the back, everything he wanted to say said.
Gioia sighed, but she could see his point. She didn’t want to leave the existence of this orchard to continue, and she’d prefer to ensure this herself. Besides that, the information Lennon could give was tantalizing. To have any advantage going forward to her next battle….
She turned away hesitantly from the house and followed Kaito, bemused.
When the two walked around to the back, a vast orchard open up before them, row upon row upon row of trees stretching out into the distance. Yet, rather than bearing fruit, strange pods hung from their branches, their contents apparent to both.
“Hey, Gioia,” Kaito piped up, Gioia turning to face him in acknowledgement. “You remember that time at the swamp, yeah?”
“Yes...what about it?”
“You got us pretty good back there, but I’m running it back,” Kaito smirked. “There’s a lot of trees we gotta smash, so we may as well make this fun. Whoever breaks more of them wins?” He offered her his hand.
Gioia chuckled softly. Her reputation had preceded her, and if this “sidequest” could include a friendly competition, there was little reason to decline. She placed her hand into his, shaking it firmly. “Very well. You’re on, Kaito.”
Kaito squeezed her hand with an enthusiastic grin, shaking it wildly. The buildup to the starting gun always got his blood pumping. He had this competition in the bag. What were a few wimpy trees compared to a raging fire, anyway? Bringing his hand back to his side, he gave Gioia one last glance, both readying themselves to a starting position.
“Three…” began Kaito. “Two…”
“GO!” Shouted Gioia with a laugh, running off into the orchard, a flustered Kaito following suit, yelling after her.
“You didn’t ‘open the game’!”
Location: Lennon’s XPLICIT farm in Sacramento, CA. In front of you, arranged into a square are four square plots of Lennon’s trees, each about an acre big (about 60 x 60 meters each) with trees bearing pod-fruit structures containing unprocessed XPLICIT. Separating the orchard into these quadrants are dirt paths, 4 meters wide.
There are about 5 meters in between the rows of trees and each column contains 30 trees spaced around 2 meters apart. This means each acre contains 360 trees for 1440 trees total. Each tree is only around 2 meters tall, but are fairly durable for their size at around C Durability and well rooted. Given the spacing of the trees, fires wouldn’t be able to jump or spread too easily and it is impossible for them to spread across different rows from their position.
Behind the players is a large tool shed and every 20 meters around the edges of the field are industrial sized plant waste containers. The tool shed has everything from chainsaws to shovels to pesticide and anything else a farm or gardener may need. On the opposite side of the area, across the field from the players is a vehicle shed with farming vehicles such as tractors, motorized lifts, plows, cultivators, etc.
Goal: Destroy more trees than your opponent! Attacking your opponent would violate the competition you’ve set for yourself and result in an immediate loss, but you can mess with them.
Additional Information: Lennon has left a note saying “Help yourself” on the tool shed door and you are free to take whatever you want from inside to start off the match with or take during the match. Lennon has also made the same note on the vehicle shed and the keys to the vehicles are in their ignition. Lennon doesn’t care whatever method you use to get rid of trees as long as the job is done.
Since the XPLICIT is in its unprocessed form, trying to use it has no effect beyond tasting really bad.
Team Combatant JoJolity
Fairy Fellers Gioia Arancini “It’s the second tree from the right. Memorize it. Make sure you don’t forget that spot.” If you’re gonna do this job, it better be done thoroughly. Destroy trees from as large an area as possible over the course of this match!
Civil Disobedients Yuigahama Kaito “Shit, I gotta find it...there should be some sodium chlorate here!” This is your golden ticket to do some demolition, but you’re here to have fun too. Mix things up and use as many different ways for destruction as you can!

A Cliff Notes Summary of the First One Out Interviews

If you haven't had time to listen to seven hours of podcast interviews, or you didn't retain everything you heard, here are some key points. I didn't think to do this until just now, so I'll be posting it as a work in progress and updating it throughout the afternoon. That way more people will have a chance to read up before the premiere.
Karishma Patel, 37, Personal Injury Trial Lawyer, Houston, TX -First generation Indian-American Her mom was as a legal assistant, and got her a filing job at her law firm when she was 14. "I didn't have other options. I was basically told I was going to be a lawyer and I didn't disagree."She has watched every season and regularly listens to RHAP. She sits close to the TV to study the inflections on people's faces when something is said to them, so that she can think about what that means. But, her parents and husband don't share her enthusiasm for the show. Asked if it's her dark pleasure she says, "It is completely bright. It is a beautiful pleasure of mine, but it is mine and mine only. I haven't been able to find people to share it with." -Doing the show has caused her conflict. "Not only is it not expected, it's not allowed. It's kind of like being a disobedient Indian girl. You're not supposed to be doing this. What you're supposed to be doing is having babies. But I don't care. I'm a risk taker. I'm here to prove to myself that I don't need to listen to anybody else. I don't need permission from anybody else. This is my journey and I'm going to take it. I hope that people watching out there can see that an Indian woman's value does not come from doing what she's told." -She doesn't currently have children, and she says she has some decisions to make as she enters a crossroads and the next stage of her life. -Her law firm told her they'll replace her if they're able to find someone, and she can have her job back if they don't. "I didn't flinch." -Her strategy is to be non-threatening and play a social game. She doesn't look 37, and she wants to use that youthfulness to be disarming. She wants to build relationships other people believe in. She defines success by other people vouching for her loyalty when they go off and have private conversations with one another. "That means I got 'em, because it's actually the other way around." Asked if she wants to find someone she can trust, "I'm not going to be capable of it. I'm too skeptical for that. I overthink things, so I'm not going to be able to trust somebody the way I want to be trusted... If I do, that's the end of my game."
My take: Oh my God. Poor Karishma. Her story hurts my heart. She reminds me so much of myself in her isolation, her defiance and her deep feelings. I worry that her fear of trusting people could get in the way of her forming genuine bonds. But, there's nothing she can do. Society has made her the way she is. I hope she gets a lot of screen time so she can be a star of her favorite show.
Missy Byrd, 24, Military Veteran/App Developer, Tacoma, Washington -Originally from Georgia. Her family was 'decently poor.' She played basketball for the Air Force Academy because she thought it was her ticket out. -She had a brain tumor. She stopped menstruating for a year and two quarters. "I'm not dating anyone but I have breast milk. I'm a literal cow... I would look down and my shirt would be wet, and I thought, 'Dang you're clumsy. I knew you were clumsy, but you're clumsier today than you were yesterday. But it was - it was - uhh - milk." She had crying fits. She developed a stutter and couldn't look at people. Doctors told her she was just stressed. When her dad died she couldn't process emotions normally. She was about to go to the French version of the Air Force Academy, École de l'air, after graduation but because of her mental instability she was removed from school. The military shipped her to the same Air Force base as Sandra (Fort Lewis.) "I don't want to be there. Super sad. Check into the post office - fuck this. Check into the dorms - hate that." The doctor there found the tumor. She got an MRI and all weekend she believed she might have cancer. Over the next year and a half she eliminated the tumor and the symptoms using vitamins. She enlisted and worked logistics. -She made a list of the things she wanted to do now that she was going to live. "The first thing was go see Beyonce. Beyonce costs way too much money for a normal person to go see, but if you've just almost had a near death experience you go see Beyonce, bro!" She was feet away. She drove across the country. She tried weed. -She had an idea for an app, but didn't even have the computer literacy to use social media. She found a veteran's association and asked if she could intern. "They said, 'No, you should build this out yourself. We want to work for you.' I said, 'No, the fuck you don't. Okay, lemme call my grandma.'" She wrote a grant proposal and won a $1,500 office space in the center of Seattle. "Just to do whatever I want. It was like a laboratory for a child. I had Play-Dough up there. I had a white board... Just mind blowing shit when I could have been dead." -She'd seen every episode of Survivor at least three times. She started watching because her Air Force Academy basketball team was getting decimated, and she related to Foa Foa getting decimated in Survivor: Samoa. She added the show to her list. Josh suggests, "The bugs are eating you because they want some of that magic." -She isn't going to tell people her story until she's in the Final 3. "That's that Final 3 magic." She doesn't want to overly rely on strategy. She doesn't want to win individual challenges. She to build a social game and find ways to relate to everyone.
My take: She's so full of exuberance. There's not a negative bone in her body right now. She's too young and her life experience is too necessarily limited to talk around three years of her life. If she shares her story, the beauty of her perspective will cause everyone to fall in love with her and want her to do well. If she doesn't, people will sense that she's hiding a lot. I think she'll figure that out and course correct within the first day. Since she was at the same Air Force base as Sandra and she was a massive fan, does that suggest she knows her?

Ronnie Bardah, 35, Professional Poker Player, Henderson, Nevada-Born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, 20 minutes south of Boston. They were the only Israeli family in town. 50% of the people in Brockton were from Cape Verde, and he considers himself an "honorary Cape Verdian." A couple of his friends were shot and killed at a young age. -He was a good kid and had a good heart, but he was always hustling. In Junior High he was flipping Oatmeal Cakes and Fudge Rounds for a profit. Slinging baseball cards. Both his parents gambled. They were always at the dog tracks or Mohegan Sun. He had his friend make him a fake ID and got stuck with the name Alaja Jones. He went by Al and started playing the casinos. Quit his job at Sears Automotive to play poker full time.-He played Atlantic City, Vegas, then internationally. He had his first big score in 2010 when he took 24th place in the main event for $320,000. Got to keep $150,000 after taxes. "Poker's a hard way to make an easy living. Lots of people try. We risk every day. You have to get to a point when you can manage your bankroll and I've never gone broke in the 16 years I've played." -In one of the most viewed poker hands of all time, he was bluffed out of a million dollar pot by a supermodel on a poker TV show filmed in Monaco. "She made a sick play. She had no idea what she was doing but all the stars were aligned."-He watched Borneo when it aired and got back into it when fellow poker player Anna Khait was on. He calls Jean-Robert, "kinda a lazy guy...He's really good at befriending multi-millionaires." "Anna Khait... is probably the least poker player out of all of us. She played for a couple years." "And then Garrett - He's a very, very smart, smart kid... Self-made millionaire. One of the very, very few." -He only drank water for 7.5 days and lost 25 pounds for his health and to get an idea of the conditions of the show. He thinks he'll thrive in the survival situation. "People like being around me. I like to fucking bust balls and joke." He thinks old school alliances are a good plan, but you have to adapt. He says that like in poker, Survivor players can have every advantage, but they have to really smell it. -He wants Vince out. "There's an Asian Zeke in there. What value does he bring besides ruining people and getting in people's heads? He's a liability in challenges. He looks like a little corn puff. We gotta get him outta here. Sorry to sound so mean but it's the truth."
My take: Ruuuuude. He has no way of knowing how other people on the cast are talking in their interviews, and may assume the trash talk is standard. If he were playing on some seasons it would be. But, in this particular season it sets him apart in an unflattering way, and it seems a part of the tough persona he's built up to escape a scary situation growing up and enter a fantasy career. We'll see whether his tribe thinks he's a straight talking character or a jerk.

Tom Laidlaw, Former NHL Player, Brampton, Ontario, Canada -He was with the New York Rangers for 7 years and the LA Kings for 4. Now he has his own podcast, True Grit Life (truegritlife.com). Does it with a friend, Kevin Allen, who writes for USA Today. Does motivational speaking. -Growing up on a dairy farm outside Toronto there was a pond to water the cows. It froze over in the winters and he'd play hockey because there wasn't much else to do. Went to Northern Michigan University - four year hockey captain, ranked #1 team in the country. Drafted as a 20 year old. "My buddy had a horse farm. We were cleaning horse shit out of the stalls. There were no cell phones back then. This is 1978. My father got a call at our farm house from the New York Rangers at the draft. Back then nobody went to the draft - it was just teams. They said I'd been drafted in the sixth round. He calls the farm house where I'm working. They bring me up. He says, 'Son, you've been drafted by the Rangers.' I said, 'Great. What do I do now?' He says, 'Finish cleaning the shit out of the stalls.'" -When he played intimidation and fighting was strategy. There were guys tougher than him, but he could fight and he could also play. Problem was, he fought a guy once, and from then on the guy wanted to fight him over and over. -Jerry Bruckheimer, big hockey fan, called the NHL and wanted to get some players on the Amazing Race. Tom had kept himself in shape, he had his passport. They ended up asking him about Survivor. He'd watched it before but not for a while. He wasn't so sure he wanted to play a game where you hurt other people, but friends helped him get his head around it. He was very impressed by Christian's toughness in the endurance challenge. To prepare for the show he studied how he reacted to different situations, how to control his heart heart, etc. He wants the mental challenge.
My take: Tom really ticked me off when he spoiled a couple of outcomes of this season. That's a betrayal of the producers, his cast and the viewers. But, if that hadn't happened I would like him. He's an easy-going, charming guy. His life experiences are a bit different than anyone else who's been on the show, which is what you want.
Vince Moua, 27, Admissions Counselor, Merced, CA -His family is Hmong. His parents lived in Vietnam in the destruction left by the war - dead bodies, guns, people who wanted to kill them. They went to refugee camps in Thailand. Then his dad became a Montana farm hand. He met Vince's mom in the US, but she came from the same place. -Vince is from small town Merced, California - the 209. Few people he knew went anywhere but the UC system and community college. He went to Stanford, one of only 7-10 Hmong. He realized the significance someone can bring to people from the same community. He tried to be pre-med but realized "no, not today." The issues of access he cared about came well before people got to the hospital. He ended up going with education. His mom was a teacher, "But when I was growing up she said, 'Yo, if you become a teacher Imma disown yo ass.' To all of us. But, that's always kinda been my jam." -He lived in South Korea for five years. He taught English in a town. Then in Seoul ahed worked with low and middle income students who wanted to study outside of Korea. -He's a Survivor superfan, who even mentions on his Tinder account that he plans to be on Survivor. His parents were worried about him doing TV because he's not out as gay to his extended family. He comes from a clan where his dad is the "top dog" and Vince is "the next top dog." In the Asian American/Pacific Islander community when you come out, it's your family who faces - in a sense - dishonor. For a long time he distanced himself from his family, hoping they'd all be less hurt if they found out and disowned him. He always tried to find friends who would be there for him should his parents not be. A year ago his mom asked him rhetorically if he was gay. "I was try'n to go around it. I was like, 'Gurl, you don't wanna know! Yo ass keeps asking!' But she kept asking, asking. So finally I told her 'Yeah, I am!' and she was crying. My dad was like, 'Oh, my son!'" But, Vince is fine with who he is and wants to show kids like him that "let's hope that it gets better." Now his parents just want him to win. -He'd like to play an old school strategy but "I'm not afraid to cut a bitch." With the tribe he's going to be Homeboy Vince from the 209, but when he talks to the camera he's going to tell people "Don't underestimate your narratives." This past year with Crazy Rich Asians, he wants people to know that there are some Crazy Hood Ass Asians.
My take: What a character. Vince has a clear point of view - Hmong, blue collar, gay - which is unique to him in Survivor lore. Even though double minorities have sometimes had trouble fitting in socially on Survivor I think somehow he's going to pull it off. As unlikely as this sounds I could even see him being a Cochran-esque winner.
Aaron Meredith, 36, Personal Trainer, Warwick, Rhode Island -He's very keyed up at Ponderosa. Rambling so fast it sounds like you're listening to 1.5x. He's read four books so far - Relentless by Tim Grover, Can't Hurt Me by Dave Goggins, Iron Cowboy by James Lawrence, Harry Potter. -He was an engineer at a building insulation plant. He was miserable, too antsy sitting at a desk. Couldn't focus. So, he drove up and down the East Coast popping kettle corn - from Maine to Florida - traveling with carnies. Bartended for a while. He'd played college football and baseball, lifted since high school, and he and his friends wanted to get "huge and jacked and ripped." The owner of the gym suggested he become a personal trainer. He ended up working mostly with middle aged women and it taught him empathy. Now he owns two women's-only fitness studios. He puts supportive women around one another and offers them the positivity to seek self-growth. -He's also a party boat emcee. Lights, DJ, bar, drinks. He's an extremely social person. -He'd first applied at 23 - 6 or 7 times over the years. He was in the mix for Cook Islands and David vs. Goliath. -He's been married 7 years and has a 5 year old son. His son is a huge fan of Survivor. Libby Vincek is his favorite player. Kara Kay was his next favorite. Aaron is already sure Molly will be his son's favorite. "He has a type. He He likes the attractive blondes. He says, 'I like them because they have a nice face.' I like mommy because she has a nice face too." The boy was very concerned about his dad going on the show. He said, "Dad, I don't want anyone to laugh at you and make fun of you." Aaron said he wanted to win. His son said, "But you might not win." When they watch the show he'll always ask, "Do they like him? Do they like her?" If Aaron is portrayed in a negative light he'll have to sit down with his son and talk. He doesn't want to play a deceitful game, but he will, because he doesn't care how he's portrayed.
My take: His story about his son is one of my favorites from all these interviews. I hope he gets to work with Molly. His adrenaline is too high. I hope he calms down a lot when the game starts. But, someone so social and sweet hearted who can win challenges and take themselves to the end has got to be a contender to win.
Chelsea Walker, 27, Digital Content Editor, Los Angeles, CA -Chelsea just took the cast photo and they put her in the third spot from the bottom, a good omen because a weird number of winners have been in that position. "Your girl's number three. I got this!" -She's a Jersey girl. She went to the University of Maryland. "I didn't do Survivor: Maryland or anything." She studied Broadcast Journalism. She knew the generic emails for NBC Universal and emailed random people until someone replied. Now she's been in LA a year. She did coverage of award shows. Now she works at IMDB, where she helps Kevin Smith with his show. She just interviewed people at SXSW. -She's been watching Survivor since she was 8. She's cried in every interview because this means so much to her. She's trying to explain that at the point she starts crying again. "It's been such a dream of mine and To be told no year after year after year - these past six years have been a total mindfuck. I've basically been called every single year. I've been to finals three times. Survivor is my one true love, but the one year they didn't call me I got really pissed off so I tried out for Big Brother. I ended up becoming the alternate and got my key being filmed and all of that crap. But I don't like that show anyway." -In September 2017 she was at a WeHo bar for her friend's birthday when, "Oh shit that's Jeff Probst." Her girlfriends all know she's obsessed, so she pulled the waiter over and asked what that guy was drinking. So, Chelsea sent another one over. "I told my friends, 'Take my credit card. Split the bill, because I can't come back after I do this. As soon as the waiter drops off the drink I'm like, 'Jeff, this one's on me. You can buy me the next one at finals.' And I just walked out of the restaurant... That was a big move!" They didn't call her again that year, but Jeff still remembered when they talked this year. -She's been working out at four different gyms - weights, pilates, yoga. Push ups. Memorized puzzles. Reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, which she keeps in.a Bible sleeve so people will think she's religious. She also carries Harry Potter because she would trust someone who read HP. She wants to keep it cool. Make one on one connections. Eventually find idols - and not tell anyone she has one - and make calculated moves. "I don't want to be a Jacob. No offense."
My take: Hearing this girl cry from joy because she's so happy to be on the show makes me emotional. She's a real go getter. I wish I were that damn fearless. Truly, I wish I were more like her. I hope her pure zest for life comes across on TV and she doesn't get stuck with a purple edit just because of her age and gender. I also hope no one decides to get threatened by her as a competitive girl and vote her off premerge. I think she'll go far. Hope so.
Dean Kowalski, 28, Account Executive, New York, New York -Referring to himself in the third person, "Dean is 28 years old. As we mentioned, he lives in New York and he prides himself on being a well rounded person when it comes to interests, abilities, personalities... If I'm listening to Drake and Lil Wayne, I gotta go home and cry to This Is Us.. I can play basketball but also think about our place in the universe." He likes to tag basketball courts with a peace symbol with a ball on it which he makes using a stencil. -He structures most of his interview with Josh around an Outwit, Outplay, Outlast format, explaining why he excels at each. -He grew up in an affluent suburb. His dream was to play in the NBA. He was 5"9 3/4, so he set his eyes on college basketball as a realistic alternative. In order to get looks from colleges he went to a school 30 minutes away - top five in the country, Nike would fly them around for games and give them free Jordan sneakers. He was one of only 4 white guys in the whole school and the only one on the team. He played with Kyrie Irving, the #1 overall draft pick. "My friend said you look like the Make a Wish Kid who just wants to be on the team for a day." He played at Colombia University, where he was co-captain his senior year despite averaging two minutes a game. He became a teacher, then did sales for a tech startup in New York. He now sells ads for Google. -He's a fan, but far from a superfan. He started watching Brenda's season. (He thinks it was Nicaragua, but it was actually Carmoan.) He works with a superfan who freaked out when they had a meeting at H&R Block with Carolyn Rivera and they went out to Bourbon Street with her. He kept watching for five years and thought he could do well. He hates when people are all talk, so he sent in a tape. For the video he interviewed random strangers on the street, who had never met him or seen the show, and asked them, "Why am I going to win it?" A barber, a construction worker. He's going to tell people he's in marketing, not sales - people have sales.
My take: I'm just not that into him.
Elaine Stott, 41, Factory Worker, Rockholds, NY -When Josh asks her not to touch the table she asks him, "You seen that Bart Simpson commercial, right? Don't touch my Butterfinger? I'm already hungry thinking about it." -"I had a pretty rough way to go growing up." Her single dad raised her and her three brothers. She was the youngest. "I was raised like one of the boys. Know what I mean? Daddy didn't know how to raise no little girl." He worked 16-17 hour days. The kids raised themselves. "When little children make their own decisions, they make poor ones." She was a hellion. -She's originally from Woodbine, Kentucky, Nick Wilson's hometown. Her god sister went to school with him and she knows him through the grapevine. "We rode on different sides of the track. 20 years ago he coulda been my lawyer, because I was on the other side of the law. I'm not bad. I've just done some things." Public intoxication several times. "I come from a dry county. It's like Footloose. We cross the state line to get a beer and when you come back you're in trouble." She stole a newspaper stand once and had to do community service. "I was a little bit mean." -She went to live with her grandpa and cleaned her act up, by which she means that she started smoking a little weed and playing sports - basketball, softball, track. She played softball and judo in college. "I couldn't do nothing real technical. We had Brazilians on the team who could do flying arm bars. But if I got these claws on you and got ya on the ground I'd waller you to death." In casting she put this guy Will in an armbar. She was gonna choke him but didn't know if she should. -When she graduated, her girlfriend was a college Freshman so she went to all the same parties and ballgames for four years. Then she realized she needed a job. Now she drives a Ford truck for a factory. She's been there 15 years. She works 12 hours, 7 days a week. -Growing up her mom "was always in my life in some sense. She'd never miss a birthday. She'd be homeless, but she'd still call." Elaine and her brothers bought her cars, and places to live, and got her jobs. "In a sense I've been mourning the loss of my mom my whole life." Once Elaine was homeless herself and there was snow on the ground. It was cold, and her teacher took her in. Gave her Christmas presents. Made her go to prom. Survivor was a thing they shared, and the teacher was gonna be Elaine's loved one. But within a one year period the woman lost her daughter, her husband, her dog and then had a stroke. Now "she walks like Frankenstein" and can't go. Elaine got Probst to talk to her, and she can't wait to watch. In October Elaine's biological mom went into a coma. She was on life support, but Elaine wouldn't unplug her. Her mom came out of it and seemed to be doing a lot better only to die very suddenly of a heart attack. -Her girlfriend and her girlfriend's two sons are gonna be watching. The 18 year old doesn't know because he can't keep a secret. The 13 year old helped her lose 20 pounds doing crossfit to come out here. She wants the money, but she really wants "some of that soul searching, that life adventure, that life changing - some of that. You know what I mean? Gimme some of that soup! Lemme eat some of that up! I want this show to build me up, because I feel like it can. I sure hope to hell it don't tear me down."
My take: About 12 sobbing emojis in a row. She's my favorite. If she gets voted out premerge I'm going to go into mourning. And how can you not sort of expect that? I am going to be so upset if they just dismiss her because she's older and looks out of shape and sounds country. If that happens, I want another Second Chance season next year.
Elizabeth Biesel, 26, Olympic swimmer, South Kingstown, Rhode Island -Josh says that Elizabeth was outright identified by one of the other contestants because they'd been watching YouTube videos about how to be a better swimmer. Others guessed she was an Olympian based on her rings tattoo. -She's from the Ocean State. They lived a block away from the beach, so they wanted her to take swimming lessons. She was a rambunctious child and swimming was the only way they could calm her energy. She started breaking records when she was 7 or 8. When she was 13 she made her first national team. At 15 she went to the Olympics. She got good early. Women peak around 22-23, and she ended her career at 24. You couldn't make much money doing it. She swam one of the longer, more grueling races, and her body said "no more." She listened to her body and retired. Some athletes lose their love for swimming because they're embittered by losing by 1/100th of a second, or they leave injured. She left on a good note. Still, if she could swim competitively for the rest of her life, she would. Now she doesn't know who she is or what she's going to do with the rest of her life. Every hour of the day used to have a purpose. Now her days are wide open. She can't keep eating 5,000 calories a day. "It's sort of like I'm mourning the death of Elizabeth Biesel the swimmer." -She was a Survivor fan as a kid because Richard Hatch was from Rhode Island. In her area "Every single household that had a television set was watching Survivor." When they asked her if she'd do the show, she felt pure joy. She said absolutely right away. She's excited about the competition of Survivor. No heated Olympic pools. You're stripped down to your core. She's amazed by the scope of the production apparatus. She's not a schemer. She wants to be a challenge beast - not the best woman but the best overall. She'd love to have a Wendell and Dom relationship with another woman. But, she wants to avoid the drama as long as she can.
My take: Could Chelsea be Wendell to her Dom? She's so wholesome. She's just so "Olympics." I love her and everything she represents. I'd love to see her rocket through the swimming competitions, lapping everyone else. Go Elizabeth.

Trading Update

• Market update – once again, there isn’t much to talk about overnight. China’s trade numbers were the big macro headline but those figures are hardly changing the broader macro narrative (exports fell slightly short while imports were inline). Otherwise the wires were largely void of major headlines. Asia was mixed, Eurozone stocks are rallying nicely (although are on track to end the week lower), and US futures are up a few points.
• Calendar - for Friday investors will be watching US Dec PPI/retail sales (8:30amET), US Michigan confidence for Jan (10amET), one Fed speaker (Harker), and earnings (BAC, BLK, FHN, FRC, JPM, PNC, and WFC pre-open).
• Eurozone stocks – the main Eurozone indices are seeing solid gains (up ~60-70bp). Most major sub-groups are trading higher but tech, fin services, banks, media, and healthcare are outperforming. Fiat Chrysler is rebounding as investors view its emissions scandal as less severe than the one that hit VW although Renault is weak as Paris prosecutors open a probe into its emissions. Technicolor is the weakest stock in the SXXP after cutting its outlook.
• FX – the DXY is in the red again so far Fri morning (the DXY is tracking for a ~1% dip this week). The USD is weak vs. the GBP and EUR and is flattish against the JPY. Investors are looking forward to the Brexit speech on Tues from PM May.
• Asia – the major Asian bourses were mixed: Japan (TPX +0.62%, NKY +0.8%), HK (Hang Seng +0.47%, HSCEI +0.66%), mainland China (SHCOMP -0.21%, Shenzhen -1.55%), Korea (KOSPI - 0.5%), Australia (ASX 200 -0.79%), and India (flattish for the major indices). China’s trade numbers were the big headline out of Asia (exports were a touch light while imports were inline). The Bank of Korea decision was largely consistent w/expectations. In India, INFY and TCS are both trading lower despite OK earnings from both. Taiwan didn’t trade very badly despite the underwhelming TSMC guidance.
• Japan – it was an extremely quiet and relatively uneventful trading session. Focus has begun to turn to earnings with Retail +2.3% bouncing from recent weakness following Fast Retailing +1.1% and Seven&i +8.6% earnings beat. Downside was led by Nintendo -5.8%, trading close to 10% of total TPX turnover, as its 'Switch' presentation failed to impress - especially with their $299.99 pricing (street was modeling more around $250~$275). Otherwise, dispersion across sectors was low and larger moves were driven more by microheadlines: Takata traded at limit high (+16.47%) after headlines saying the co and the US Justice Department may announce a settlement as soon as Fri over air bags, SMM -4.7% got hit after Nickel's weakness overnight, while Screen -4.0% traded lower on TSMC's weakerthan- expected guidance for 1H '17.
• Hong Kong - sector wise Coal outperformed +3.75% together with Chinese OEMs +2.8% while Chinese Railways were down 0.4%. In the Chinese property sector, Vanke was well bid +5.7% after China Resources Holdings has agreed to sell 15.3% of total shs out to Shenzhen Metro Group at 37.2b yuan. In the Auto sector, Great Wall Motor spiked 2.7% after announcing a positive profit alert; the rest of the sector traded higher. Despite a pullback of the commodity complex, Steel +3% and Coal pushed higher driven mainly by further NDRCdriven expectations of SOE reform/consolidation, China Shenhua +4.1% Angang Steel +2.5%. The bounce in oil prices triggered a rally in Energy names, Sinopec putting on a +3.57%, Petrochina +2.6%.
• South Korea – the KOSPI ended off 0.5%. Samsung Electronics slumped ~3.45% following tech weakness in the US on Thurs (note that Samsung did a lot worse than TSMC). Hynix finished down ~0.59% (JPMorgan has a Hynix note this morning and recommends booking profits instead of chasing the rally).
• Taiwan – the TAIEX ended off 0.33%. TSMC fell 1.63% after its downbeat guidance (although the local TSM did a lot better than the US ADR on Thurs which fell ~3%). The rest of tech didn’t trade too badly despite TSM (MediaTek -0.92%, Hon Hai -0.12%, etc). On the upside, outperformers included Advantech +1.5%, Quanta +0.79%, Pegatron +0.96%, Innolux +1.17%, and AUO +1.16%.
• US equity macro update - the multi-month rally has been underpinned by two main developments: 1) improved nominal growth (which predated the election by a few months and is largely politically agnostic for the near-term) and 2) GOD EMPEROR Trump enthusiasm. One of these factors remains in place (growth) while the other is increasingly dubious (the political optimism – see below). However, the market isn’t anticipating instant action out of Washington and in fact the ’17 numbers (~$127-128) don’t really require any political/policy changes (the problem is more w/the 2018 numbers where the tentative ~$145 EPS forecast needs some assistance from Washington). Therefore investors may give the benefit of the doubt to GOD EMPEROR Trump and Congressional Republicans until at least the end of the summer. This faith though is finite and will likely wind up being disappointed as investors appreciate the insurmountable complexity and tradeoffs of tax reform and realize that no government, Republican or Democrat, can provide much added impetus to a full-employment economy facing the twin structural headwinds of tepid labor supply and productivity growth.

Top Headlines for Friday

• China Dec trade numbers; slight export miss and inline imports – exports came in -6.1% (vs. the St -4% and JPM -3.3%) while imports rose 3.1% (vs. the St +3% and JPM +3.4%). Takeaways from JPMorgan’s Grace Ng - While December export growth, in over-year-ago US$ terms, came in below expectations, in sequential terms, exports still rose 1.9%m/m sa, adding to the notable gain at 3.3% m/m sa in November. Besides, imports came in line with expectations, up 2.1% m/m sa in December, following the surge at 7.8% m/m sa in November. Commodity imports came in rather mixed in December, although that followed the notable broad-based gain in November. Looking ahead, the expected modest improvement in global growth going into 2017, along with CNY’s trade-weighted adjustment over the past year, would likely be moderately supportive for China’s external trade, although uncertainty regarding potential US-China trade tensions poses notable risks. http://bit.ly/2imQ8xz
• China vs. US – a Chinese newspaper, the Global Times, said blocking Chinese access to its islands in the South China Sea, an idea endorsed by Rex Tillerson during his confirmation hearing, would require the US to “wage war”; "Tillerson had better bone up on nuclear power strategies if he wants to force a big nuclear power to withdraw from its own territories” – Reuters http://reut.rs/2jDzLgS
• China currency bears remain despite recent CNY strengthening – Reuters notes that the PBOC may have tempered near-term cautiousness and given pause to short-term traders but sentiment around the yuan is still very gloomy. http://reut.rs/2iri3zz
• OPEC unlikely to deliver fully on cut pledge – Reuters notes that some cheating is inevitable and OPEC apparently would be happy if compliance stays within a 50-80% band; OPEC sources say compliance “is never 100%” and the cartel would be content so long as the overall rate is north of 50% – Reuters http://reut.rs/2j7gPs0
• Yellen spoke Thurs night although her remarks weren’t very incremental; Yellen said the US economy doesn’t face any serious short-term obstacles. “Unemployment has now reached a low level, the labor market is generally strong and wage growth is beginning to pick up,” Yellen said Thursday in a meeting with educators. “Inflation has moved up from a very low level, and it’s a little bit under our 2 percent objective, but it’s pretty close.” Bloomberg http://bloom.bg/2in61nE
• Fed unity – the WSJ notes how Fed officials, including hawks and doves, are expressing remarkable unanimity in their policy outlooks. A slew of Fed officials spoke over the last few days and most think the FOMC will hike rates 2-4 times this year (most appear comfortable w/the current three hike outlook expressed by the median 2017 dot). WSJ http://on.wsj.com/2jeH3Lk
• Monetary vs. fiscal policy - the Fed continues to clearly warn Congress/GOD EMPEROR Trump that any material fiscal stimulus would likely result in a faster withdrawal of accommodation (“Evans Thurs morning became the latest in a series of Fed policymakers to quietly warn that this may not be the best moment to launch a major fiscal plan or throw too much stimulus into the economy” http://reut.rs/2j4IZUl).
• US fiscal outlook weakens – the US had a deficit of $580B/3.1% of GDP in C16, up from 2.6% in C15. The 2016 figure follows 6 years of shrinking deficits and the numbers are set to worsen in the years ahead. WSJ http://on.wsj.com/2jcMomt
• Tax reform/border taxes - Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on Thursday defended the House GOP border tax proposal and called it "a little offensive" that some U.S. companies are criticizing it. "This is not controversial, and quite frankly, it's a little offensive that some of the major American companies that are importers who do business worldwide are even raising concerns of this plan, because I don't see them going to Germany or Mexico or China to raise these concerns” – The Hill http://bit.ly/2jLoQ9a
• Border taxes - Larry Kudlow speaking on CNBC (at ~1:15pmET Thurs afternoon) is vehemently against the idea of border taxes and worries that this issue could doom the entire tax reform effort given how controversial it is. Kudlow at one point was being considered for an economic job in the GOD EMPEROR Trump team (it isn’t clear where that consideration stands now). GOD EMPEROR Trump hasn’t explicitly addressed the Ryan border tax blueprint.
• Paul Ryan conducted a town hall on CNN Thurs night although there weren’t many materially incremental headlines out of the event. Ryan reiterated a desire to pass ACA replace legislation at the same as the repeal bills are approved. Ryan said Republicans are moving "as quickly as they can" to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but said he doesn't yet have a date, and it will take "a little bit of time" to do so (CNN http://cnn.it/2in0HR5).
• Healthcare - the NYT details how GOD EMPEROR Trump’s healthcare promises will be difficult to achieve (http://nyti.ms/2jLkQFK) while the WSJ discusses the bipartisan healthcare problem: “the sick are expensive and someone has to pay” (http://on.wsj.com/2j7eIUU). The head of the conservative House Freedom Caucus predicted Thursday that the GOP's ObamaCare replacement plan is “likely to fail” in the Senate (The Hill http://bit.ly/2jqElzM).
• GOD EMPEROR Trump’s team calls on Republicans to make childcare more affordable – GOD EMPEROR Trump aids are instructing Congressional Republicans to incorporate measures into upcoming tax reform legislation to make childcare more affordable. Proposals would allow parents to deduct certain child care costs. Politico http://politi.co/2irsanV
• Don’t Let the Dollar Inhibit Growth. A soaring currency could slow exports, fueling populist anger. Time for another Plaza Accord? WSJ editorial. http://on.wsj.com/2iOJGjY
• Int’l company-specific news update from Fri morning. The Infosys (out Thurs night US/preopen India) and Tata Consultancy (out after the India close Thurs) earnings were decent but both stocks are getting hit in India trading Fri morning. In Europe Fiat Chrysler is rebounding as investors view its emissions scandal as less severe than the one that hit VW although Renault is weak as Paris prosecutors open a probe into its emissions. Technicolor is the weakest stock in the SXXP after cutting its outlook.
• US company-specific news update from Thurs night. It was another pretty uneventful evening. DOV provided F17 guidance – the top line was fine but the EPS guide was a bit below the St. Pandora (P) published an upside preannouncement for CQ4 (the co also announced restructuring actions). Finally, RYI said that it anticipates seasonally lower revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to the third quarter of 2016 due to fewer shipping days.

Calendar of events to watch for the week of Mon Jan 16

• Bottom Line – the big focus during the week of 1/16 will be on earnings, US eco data (US CPI for Dec Wed morning 1/18), the ECB decision (Thurs 1/19 – this should be a non-event), China eco data (Dec IP/retail sales and Q4 GDP all out Thurs night/Fri morning), and two Yellen speeches (she will take part in a discussion Wed 1/18 at 3pmET and speaks at Stanford Thurs 1/19 at 8pmET). Also GOD EMPEROR Trump’s inauguration is Friday. Keep in mind Mon 1/16 is a holiday in the US (MLK Day).
• Mon 1/16 – US markets are closed for MLK Day. BHP is scheduled to give its Q4 production update Mon night.
• Tues 1/17 – this day should be pretty quiet w/no major eco numbers and only a few earnings (CMA, MS, and UNH pre-open and ADTN and CSX after the close). In addition, two Fed officials will be speaking (Dudley, Williams), Chinese President Xi gives a keynote at the Davos conf., and UK PM May is expected to give a “major” speech on Brexit.
• Wed 1/18 – the big focus on Wed will be the US CPI for Dec at 8:30amET w/investors watching inflation numbers closely. Also Yellen will participate in a discussion (3pmET) and
a bunch of earnings are due (AMTD, ASML, Burberry, C, FAST, GS, NTRS, SCHW, and USB pre-open and NFLX, PLXS, PTC, and SLM after the close).
• Thurs 1/19 – the ECB decision (7:45amET statement, 8:30amET press conf.) should be a non-event. The other events include Yellen’s speech at Stanford (8pmET) and earnings (BBT, BK, CHKP, KEY, PPG, UNP, and WBS pre-open and AXP, IBM, and SWKS after the close).
• Fri 1/20 – this day will be dominated by China’s eco data (Dec IP/retail sales and Q4 GDP out Thurs night/Fri morning), earnings (CFG, COL, GE, KSU, RF, SLB, STI, and SYF pre-open), and two Fed speakers (Harker and Williams). GOD EMPEROR Trump’s inauguration (he becomes president at 12pmET) shouldn’t be all that important (although many are fearful of investors booking profits on the “GOD EMPEROR Trump Trade” following this event).
